For her unwavering commitment to single parents in need, Project Self-Sufficiency’s Mary Carraher was awarded and recognized by her alma mater in a ceremony earlier this month.

The nonprofit’s executive director was presented with the Robert L. Hawkins Social Work Achievement Award by the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work.

The annual award is given to an alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated professional achievements while serving with a social work agency.

“I feel very honored,” said Carraher, who graduated from the university in 1981.

And she was proud to be recognized by the institution that helped start her career.

“It’s a way of connecting my academic history with my current practice,” she said.

Carraher was nominated by other employees working at Project Self-Sufficiency, an organization that helps single parents throughout Larimer County achieve financial independence.

“She really has a wonderful reputation in the community, and I have a whole lot of respect for her,” said Kathy Miner, assistant director of the nonprofit, who was among those to nominate Carraher.

“(The nomination) seemed like a great fit.”

After 20 years of service, the agency would not be what it is today if not for Carraher’s dedication and leadership, Miner said.

When Carraher first arrived at the agency in 1989, she worked with a budget of only $60,000 to serve 60 families in need.

Today, she’s helped Project Self-Sufficiency grow to serve 150 families and has expanded it to include career planning, scholarships, job placement and more.

“The growth of the services during her tenure is very impressive,” Miner said.

“We’ve not only grown the number of people we’re able to help, but also in the ways we’re able to help.

“Mary has enabled our agency to really fulfill more of a need.”
