Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How do I volunteer?
PS-S has many volunteer opportunities that include helping mail the quarterly newsletter, holiday party and family sponsorship assistance—and other assignments on a specific project basis— car repair clinicians, and others.

Community members interested in volunteering can complete the PS-S volunteer application located on the PS-S website and return it to the PS-S Loveland office.  A staff member will be in touch to discuss your interest and find the appropriate volunteer opportunity within the organization.

  2. What is the advantage of donating my car to PS-S?
Cars donated to the Project Self-Sufficiency Cars for Families program are not sold, but become the major form of transportation for selected PS-S families and others served by the Larimer County Workforce Center.

Under a law that went into affect on January 1, 2005, your deduction for a donation of a ‘qualified vehicle’ that a charity sells is limited to the gross sales proceeds.

However, your deduction for the same donation vehicle when a charity uses it in its work is the vehicle’s value at the time of the donation.  Please consult with a tax professional for further information.

  3. How long is the waiting period to enroll in PS-S?
Project Self-Sufficiency is currently expanding the program in order to assist more families. In Loveland, the waiting list can be as short as two months.

In Fort Collins, the wait can be much longer, but we are adding services to shorten that wait. It is important to apply soon as we date-stamp applications. Be sure and update us when your address or phone number change. Contact MARIAH@ps-s.org to update contact information.

  4. Does Project Self-Sufficiency have apartments?
Yes, one benefit for some enrolled program participants is the available housing at the award winning Willow Place housing complex.

20 PS-S program participants and their families live at Willow Place while enrolled in the program.  However, at this time, the wait list for PS-S applicants desiring housing at Willow Place is closed.  Please check back for future openings.

  5. Who enrolls in the Project Self-Sufficiency program?
PS-S participants represent many single parents in our community struggling to make a living wage and support their families.

Examples of program participants include but are not limited to recently divorced stay-at-home parents needing updated skills and help reentering the workforce, young mothers needing assistance finishing their GEDs and continuing on to college, and healing domestic violence victims navigating legal services while preparing for a self-sufficient future.

  6. How is Project Self-Sufficiency funded?
PS-S is a non-profit tax-exempt organization, approved under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.  As a charity, PS-S relies on diverse funding sources such as foundation grants, United Way support, business sponsorships, corporate contributions, donations from individuals and fundraising events.

We partner with many service clubs, churches, membership organizations and other community groups to both educate and increase philanthropy in Northern Colorado.
